The Library of Virginia

The Library of Virginia will conserve approximately 700 Virginia legislative petitions dating from 1776 to 1850. The petitions document popular opinions of the time on public and private issues. Project staff will work with contracted conservators to conduct deacidification and rehousing. Collections will be stored in archival folders to preserve the original documents, and staff will digitize collections to improve access for researchers and to mitigate risks of damage from repeated handling of the material. Project staff will update catalog records with improved images of the collection and will update associated finding aids. Beneficiaries of the project will include historians and genealogical researchers.
