The Vermont Department of Building and General Services will conserve Sculpture on the Highway, an outdoor collection of sixteen monumental marble and concrete sculptures which were created at two international sculpture symposia held in Vermont during the summers of 1968 and 1971. The symposia, modeled after previous events in Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East, brought artists from all over the world to the Green Mountains to live and work together in an open studio environment. The large-scale works were created with both native Vermont marble, and also from locally manufactured concrete. The project team will clean, repair, and stabilize each sculpture, to mitigate the effects of concrete deterioration involving includes cracking, spalling, water infiltration, and exposed steel reinforcement.
