University at Buffalo (Department of Information Science)
Log Number: RE-256608-OLS-24
The University at Buffalo in collaboration with Ithaka S+R will study the workplace experiences of library and information science (LIS) BIPOC first-generation professionals. They will investigate workplace challenges of LIS first-generation professionals and strategies and cultural assets that these professionals employ to navigate and succeed in LIS workplaces. Findings from this project will provide insights to inform graduate programs and professional association initiatives to support first-generation professionals as they enter the workplace; inform managers and supervisors of the challenges faced by this population to bring about environmental and culture changes; provide asset-based narratives for current students and recent graduates as they enter LIS workspaces; and provide an avenue for first-generation professionals to voice their concerns, share their success strategies, and start an initiative to build community and improve workplace experiences.
