Two projects will be the focus of this grant: The Ka Ipu Kukui project will make available online collections providing access to cultural, historical, and information resources to Native Hawaiians both in and outside of Hawaii. The project will develop the Hawaii Digital Library, an online collection of publications about Hawaii, and staff and operate a library at Miloli'i on the island of Hawaii. The primary project outcome is that Native Hawaiians will use Hawaiian resource materials to research and document family genealogy, land claims, and cultural traditions and practices. The Ka Lama Ulu project will provide outreach services in communities with the largest number of Native Hawaiians. As part of this project, Kahi 'Ohana outreach sites will provide services that foster reading and develop a foundation for educational achievement. Workshops and demonstrations will be conducted statewide with parents and caregivers of young children to teach emergent literacy strategies, introduce literature, and provide guidance in preparing their children for school.
