Spelman College (Spelman College Museum of Fine Art)

The Spelman College Museum of Art proposes a project to care for the collection of art while offering opportunities for undergraduate students of HBCUs to gain experience in collections management and care. Museums staff will inventory and appraise works, create physical and digital object files, re-organize art storage, and add data and images to a searchable online database. Work study and internship opportunities for students at the Atlanta University Center will offer hands-on experience cataloging and organizing the collection. The museum will hire consultants and educators to foster collaborations with institutions and cultivate collection focused educational opportunities to train students in conservation ethics, museum best practices, and collections care. The project will improve access to the Spelman Museum collection and create opportunities for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the collections care and management profession.
