Longwood University (Robert Russa Moton Museum)
Log Number: MH-253084-OMS-23
The Robert Russa Moton Museum at Longwood University will create a new website to engage students around the country with the story of Barbara Johns, who in 1951, led hundreds of fellow Moton High School students in a strike to call for better educational opportunities. Museum staff will collaborate with humanities scholars, an advisory council of K-12 teachers, and digital media experts to conduct focus groups, develop content and design components, and launch the site. The new website will incorporate a selection of interviews with participants in the 1951 strike, as well as artifacts, archival documents, and images. Resources for teachers will help them introduce this new immersive digital experience to students and generate an understanding of the choices made by Johns and her classmates and the consequences of civic engagement.
