The Wisconsin Maritime Museum will develop a collections move and consolidation plan to evaluate space and facility requirements and the future composition of its collection. Based on the recommendations from a recent Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program assessment, the museum will use the services of a conservation consultant and a project assistant to help develop a framework for the anticipated expansion of the collections currently housed in its offsite storage facility. The museum will also determine the type and amount of new storage furniture needed, and conduct on-site collections training to increase the skill sets of staff and volunteers, creating work flow protocols for photographing, cleaning, and preparing the artifacts to be moved. The project will also allow staff to travel to two other maritime museums with major off-site collections facilities in order to establish a peer cohort willing to share best practices and lessons learned and to provide counsel as the museum prepares for the eventual move of its off-site collections.
