Pettigrew State Park will conserve two American Indian canoes to prepare them for exhibition in a new visitor center slated for completion in 2021. The project will address the need to mitigate degradation to the objects incurred since an earlier conservation treatment. A project conservator will stabilize and re-treat the canoes based on a detailed conservation plan. The treatment plan will serve as a model for other conservators addressing damage from sucrose applications that have undergone re-crystallization as a result of temperature and humidity fluctuations. The two canoes will be displayed as part of a statewide interpretive plan to improve the interpretation of the lives and cultures of American Indians living in what is now North Carolina.
