Michigan State University (Michigan State University Museum)
Log Number: MA-30-19-0349-19
The Michigan State University Museum will improve accessibility, environmental conditions, and housing for more than 5,000 vertebrate specimens, including rare, endangered, and threatened species. The project will involve relocating or replacing old cabinets to accommodate new storage furniture and shelving that can properly house and protect the diverse collection of specimens including study skins, taxidermy mounts, and skeletons. The museum will purchase cabinetry and archival supplies; install archival drawer or shelf lining materials; rehouse specimens into new cabinets or onto new mobile shelving units; and construct and install protective dust covers on the shelving. The project team will update taxonomic nomenclature and storage locations and produce new labels for the collections. The museum will also install a small temporary display to acquaint the public with collections stewardship activities.
