Maine Historical Society

The Maine Historical Society will improve the care and management of its collection of Maine-related clothing and accessories dating from the late 1700s through the 20th century. The museum will hire a professional costume curator and curatorial assistant to facilitate the project, and they will be assisted by three paid interns. Project staff will rehouse and improve cataloging of 1,200 pieces considered most at-risk, and move them to a new offsite storage facility providing optimum environmental conditions. The museum will photograph the processed pieces and add the digital files to the cataloging records. An online guide to the collection will provide greater context for the materials and create opportunities for the public to browse by themes or review the entire collection through the Maine Memory Network.
