Seattle Art Museum

The Seattle Art Museum will satisfy a critical, institution-wide preservation priority by replacing antiquated and at times hazardous built-in cabinets and hanging racks with new, high-quality, high-density storage units, and rehousing artworks within these units. The 85-year-old furniture to be replaced is located in one of the institution's three facilities-the Asian Art Museum-an original art deco building housing 11,000 works of art. The project will rehouse over 4,600 objects, improving storage conditions, aiding in the long-term preservation of the collection, and allowing for future collections growth and ease of accessibility for curators, conservators, scholars, students, and researchers. The storage improvements project will be undertaken as part of a larger building renovation project that will address structural, environmental, security, and accessibility deficiencies in the historic 1933 building.
