University of California, Los Angeles (Fowler Museum)
Log Number: MA-256123-OMS-24
The Fowler Museum at the University of California Los Angeles will create an exhibition and associated programming about the role of fire in traditional ecological knowledge and the ways in which this knowledge has been embedded into objects over time. The exhibition will highlight ancient, historical, and contemporary knowledge systems around fire from three Indigenous communities in Southern California: the Tongva, Ivilyuqaletem (Cahuilla), and Payómkawichum (Luiseño). It will feature historical art objects created by Indigenous artists and knowledge bearers, placed in dialogue with commissioned contemporary artworks and installations created by artists from those communities. To accompany the exhibition, staff will organize educational public programs, such as artist talks and panels, performances, and tours.
