The Portland Art Museum will create a retrospective exhibition of the modernist painter and printmaker Yoshida Chizuko (1924–2017). Works in the exhibition will include early paintings and sketches, rare monotypes, woodblock prints and zinc-plate mixed media prints, together with archival materials such as diaries, photographs, and musical records, as well as exhibition materials from her years with the artist collective Joryū Hanga Kyōkai (1956–1965). The exhibition will also include information about the artist’s contributions as an advocate for women artists in the 1950s and 1960s. in association with the exhibition, staff will host a series of community-centered public programs. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog publication to provide further historical context for the artist’s life and work.
