Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History will partner with the London Nelson Legacy Initiative and the Santa Cruz Black Health Matters Initiative to research and share the stories of twelve pre-1900s Black pioneers buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz County, California. The project team will produce and organize history and art exhibitions, documentary footage of the research process, and public murals. Additional educational programming will include a panel discussion, an historic walking tour, a community event, as well as the development of a related K-12 curriculum. As a result of the project, the residents of Santa Cruz County will have increased access to local historical knowledge, a better understanding of how to research other hidden histories, and a stronger sense of cross-cultural connections among community members.
