The New-York Historical Society will work with a scholar in Native American studies to assess its collections that pertain to Indigenous history from the perspective of Native American and U.S. history. The consulting scholar will work with museum and library staff to update collection descriptions, create navigation tools, and train staff to integrate Indigenous histories, materials, and perspectives into their work with collections and related programming. Two additional consulting scholars will also aid staff in generating care protocols for sensitive items and developing staff guidance materials, including identifying instances where other scholars and Tribal representatives should be contacted for further consultation. The project will make a collections guide and digitized images and information about the collection available online, bringing to light and making accessible material that has been largely ignored, misunderstood, and invisible.
