The Newark Museum of Art will launch the Seeing Slavery initiative, a project designed to diversify the artworks and interpretation of the museum’s galleries of 18th and 19th century American art to be more inclusive of underrepresented voices and narratives. A new thematic exhibit will feature both historical and contemporary artworks and incorporate the voices of Black artists addressing the continued impact of slavery. Project activities will also include the installation of works of art by diverse artists in surrounding galleries, installing bilingual labels in all galleries, and developing a series of new public and school education programs. Building on years of surveys and focus groups, the initiative is designed to further the museum’s strategic vison to move beyond the traditional display of objects to stimulate conversations and deeper understanding within its galleries about the histories of underrepresented populations.
