Saint Louis Zoo
Log Number: MA-251760-OMS-22
The Saint Louis Zoo’s Education Department and its Institute for Conservation Medicine (ICM) will launch an initiative that recognizes the connection between the health of people, animals, and the environment. Working closely with teachers from underserved public school districts, the museum will develop and implement a program that uses One Health, a Center for Disease Control initiative, as the foundation for the project. Program activities will include developing a package of lessons, activities, and case studies; developing hands-on labs that showcase field-based One Health work; and developing and implementing a new paid summer internship program for local high school students who will assist ICM staff with ongoing field research and explore One Health careers. This project will address the lack of One Health education in grades 11–12 by providing access, opportunities, and vetted content to high school students in six school districts in St. Louis County.
