Longwood University (Longwood Fine Arts Center, VA)

The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts will increase collections stewardship and access, as well as undergo a significant storage space renovation. The museum will install a new mobile art storage system that will provide for optimal preservation and access to its collection of 4,500 pieces of American art in all media and disciplines from the 19th century to present with an emphasis on modern and contemporary Virginia artists. The museum’s spatial constraints have been a long-term issue; this system will double the usable space within the existing storage area and allow the museum to convert the space into a collections processing area. By the end of the project, collections will be fully rehoused and stored in the optimal environment; staff will increase efficiency and productivity when accessing collections; and collections will be more accessible for research, collections programming, and interinstitutional loans.
