History Colorado will create an exhibition on the Sand Creek Massacre. The museum will partner with three tribes: Northern Cheyenne Tribe of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Northern Arapaho Tribe, and Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. On November 29, 1864, U.S. federal troops attacked a peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho who, at the direction of Colorado's governor, were lawfully occupying the land along the Sand Creek on southeastern Colorado's plains. This exhibition will be the first in the U.S. to share the culturally vetted history of the massacre with the general public through the voices of Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal members. Intended results include contributing to the remembrance work already done by tribal members, educating tribal youth who are looking to learn about the massacre, and educating general audiences about Cheyenne and Arapaho history.
