The 18th Street Arts Complex will expand its cultural asset mapping project to document the diverse cultural contributors to the Pico neighborhood of Santa Monica. The museum will train 20-50 new cultural asset map contributors and users; add 60 new cultural treasures to the asset map; hold public presentations for community groups about the cultural mapping project; and host one large-scale "block party" celebrating the cultural richness of the neighborhood. The project team will also develop a system of good data maintenance for the map's website, records, archives of original content, and supporting documentation. Participants will gain skills in basic ArcGIS mapping, cultural sensitivity training, video recording, and interviewing techniques as they contribute to the stabilization of a neighborhood threatened by gentrification.
