Gateway to Science Center
Log Number: MA-03-04-0784-04
Purpose: Serving as Centers of Community Engagement The Gateway to Science Center will collaborate with organizations serving at-risk youth to present an education program focused on the science of art, following a model developed through a pilot program. The program will expose students to science, art, and culture and allow them to experience the interrelatedness of these areas. It will be presented by the center's program director and area artists and will involve the following components: (1) monthly workshops on a variety of art topics, in which students will learn the science involved in special effects and will make their own supplies for art projects; (2) field trips to sites and events that are relevant to the topics presented each month, in which older students will be trained to act as docents at each site for younger students; (3) a one-week summer video workshop; and (4) displays of student artwork at group residences and other locations throughout the community. The project will integrate science and art to offer students both academic challenges and an opportunity for creative expression. The students will benefit from a sense of accomplishment when their work is displayed.
