Lemon Hill Mansion

Purpose: Serving as Centers of Community Engagement Lemon Hill is a historic house and museum in Philadelphia that brings life to post-Revolutionary War history, Philadelphia trade, domestic and social customs, urban development, and other themes. The era is interpreted through period artifacts, teaching history through the life of a merchant family from 1800 through 1837. Lemon Hill has diverse audiences. Through this grant, the museum will work more closely with the local community, especially the schools, and will incorporate the large body of new research that has become available on global trade, horticulture, and the lives of people who lived both upstairs and downstairs in the house. This project will bring together scholars, project coordinators, staff, and volunteers to review Lemon Hill research materials; work out interpretive themes that are accessible, rich, and lively, based on the unique qualities of the site; and produce a master document that will become the map for action items that can be rolled out as funds become available, including lectures and special exhibits, storylines, and tours tailored to specific audiences. Specifically, the grant will support meetings with consultants to review interpretive and research materials, develop new interpretive themes, and prepare a report.
