Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The children's Museum (CM) of Pittsburgh will open an expanded 80,000-square-foot museum in November 2004, with new exhibits and programs based on its philosophy of "Play with Real Stuff." CM staff believe that in our fast-paced technological society, children need a solid foundation of learning activities that are concrete, real, and relevant to their lives. Through "Real Stuff," children are encouraged to find their own answers through hands-on exploration where process is valued over product. Real tools and art materials are part of the mix, and artists play an important role by working in museum exhibits and creating one-of-a-kind interactive art experiences. Exhibit areas include the Art Studio, the Garage/Workshop, Waterplay, Theater, the Attic, the Nursery, the Backyard, and the Neighborhood. CM has created unique partnerships with other arts and cultural organizations that will enable it to remain a touchstone for children and families, fostering interest in lifelong learning. This grant will allow the museum to keep a designer and developer on staff to continue to refine and test components of the "Real Stuff" exhibits and to create new exhibits.
