Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The Sandra and David Bakalar and Stephen Paine Galleries are the professional museum of Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt), a 135-year-old, publicly supported college of art and design. The galleries serve as the college's laboratory for exploration of contemporary art and design, and are an important link between MassArt and the people of greater Boston. Guided by the public educational mission of the college, the galleries offer services at no charge to the community in the form of exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs for schoolchildren. The galleries' primary education program, Looking to Learn, serves more than 800 students and teachers each year. In this project, the galleries will (1) introduce a new educational product based on Looking to Learn that will use hand-held computer devices to inform the viewer and to stimulate interactive activities with the artwork and (2) establish a computer resource room with desktop computers that will both parallel and augment the gallery experience with hand-held computers, as well as function as an independent resource room and archive. This new media project enhances the delivery of the Looking to Learn program for youth and extends the benefits of gallery education to a wider audience.
