Purpose: Supporting Lifelong Learning The Stamford Museum and Nature Center (SMNC) will fund the Family Engagement Project, addressing the Museums for America goal of supporting lifelong learning. The initiative has three components: (1) regular weekend and summer programming, conducted by part-time staff and focusing on farming and natural science; (2) a family activity guide for self-guided tours of the SMNC Heckscher Farm; and (3) a trail map and guide and markers for the trail system. The primary goal of the Family Engagement Project is to deepen and enrich the experience of families with children ages 5 to10 who are visiting SMNC's unique 118-acre site and to expand the use of the farm and nature trails as outdoor classrooms. The Adventures in Nature programming for families will focus on natural science topics, making use of the extensive trail system with its hardwood forest, brooks, vernal ponds, and glacial outcroppings. The Down on the Farm programs will focus on agricultural science and farm life, using the farm's pastures, garden areas, and livestock. The project will ensure that the onsite experience is active and engaging, that families will find multiple opportunities for learning, and that visitors will be interested in coming to SMNC on a regular basis year-round.
