Purpose: Sustaining Cultural Heritage The John Wesley Powell Museum in Page, Arizona, houses more than 3,000 artifacts, archives, and specimens related to the history of the region. Page is a planned community near the Arizona-Utah border. It began as a temporary construction camp for workers on the Glen Canyon Dam but has grown into a major resort area. The museum is an educational tool for the surrounding community, which includes Lake Powell and the Navajo and Hopi reservations. This grant will enable the museum to hire a collections management expert to perform an onsite assessment of the museum's collections and policies and to conduct a training workshop on proper care and management of collections. The museum will catalog at least 60 percent of its collections in a searchable database and conduct a thorough inventory of 100 percent of the collections housed in the museum. The project will enable the museum to store its collections according to accepted standards by accession, size, and conservation considerations by purchasing preservation furniture, materials, and supplies, including acid-free boxes and tissue paper and flat storage files. The museum will also purchase two hygrotherographs to monitor environmental conditions in the building.
