Door County Historical Society will create permanent, outdoor interpretive signage for Heritage Village. The historical site features eight buildings including a general store, schoolhouse, fish house, and chapel arranged to represent a typical crossroads village from 1880-1910. Outdoor interpretation of the grounds will enable the museum to provide a hands-on learning opportunity for visitors year-round as the buildings are currently only open and staffed seasonally. The museum will design and install 12 ADA-compliant signs that feature interactive audio and tactile elements. Staff will contract with an outdoor sign fabricator, an artist to create tactile elements, and an audio interpretation specialist. Society staff will survey visitors to evaluate the effectiveness of the signage. The project will result in expanded interpretation with a focus on personal lived experiences and will benefit visitors to Heritage Village and the local community.
