County of Missoula (Historical Museum at Fort Missoula)

The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula will design and fabricate an immersive exhibit centered on the World War II era Alien Detention Center. The museum will expand the interpretation of this important part of history through restoring the detention center barracks where over 2,000 Japanese and Italian men were detained at Fort Missoula’s Department of Justice camp. Museum staff will engage with an exhibit design consultant to develop an exhibit design plan, gather ideas from local stakeholders, identify artifacts or replicas for display, and create interpretive signs. The exhibit will allow visitors to see how the detainees lived and understand more about this dark time in local and regional history so that as a society we do not repeat it.
