By Eleanor Greene Intern, IMLS It isn’t just the art at the Museum of Contemporary Art that comes from different backgrounds. Its visitors do too, which is why MOCA in North Miami, Fla., aims to make its galleries and programming accessible to a wide audience. In this interview, Director Bonnie Clearwater explains how the museum’s goal led to the creation of the Junior Docents program. For this college-level seminar series, the museum recruited high school students from the surrounding neighborhoods and across the Greater Miami area. One of these students, Kassandra Timothe, talks about the depth of the art education and job training she received as a Junior Docents. She credits the program for her critical thinking and public speaking skills that helped her get a job in a City Councilman’s office after she graduated from college. The Museum of Contemporary Art was one of 10 winners of the 2012 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for libraries and museums that are serving their communities in exceptional ways. Winners of the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service will be announced on April 23, 2013.
